FERC — Morning Application Status Report (MASR) Automation

Background

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) oversees critical applications that support its regulatory functions across the energy sector. To ensure daily operational readiness, a specialized QA team was responsible for verifying the health and stability of more than thirty integrated applications each morning before business hours. This early validation was essential to confirm that systems were available and functioning properly for staff and stakeholders.

Challenge

The daily health check process required QA staff to begin work at 6:00 AM, manually verifying applications and endpoints within a limited time window. Each cycle consumed nearly two hours of effort and placed pressure on the team to complete checks before executives required status updates. Because of time constraints, only selective coverage was possible, and there was no efficient way to retest failed checks before reports were distributed. This created operational strain and limited the reliability of early-morning readiness reporting.

Solution

Our team implemented an automated MASR solution to streamline and strengthen the daily health check process. The automation was scheduled to run at 5:00 AM, executing validations across all applications and endpoints before the start of the workday. Failed checks were automatically retested, ensuring accuracy before results were finalized. A consolidated report was generated and distributed to leadership and relevant stakeholders by 6:00 AM, eliminating delays and manual intervention. Training sessions were conducted with QA staff to ensure they could maintain and extend the automation framework as needed.

Results

  • Daily health verification reduced from two hours → thirty minutes unattended
  • Automatic retesting ensured failed checks were validated before reporting
  • Comprehensive coverage achieved across 30+ applications and 40+ endpoints
  • Reports generated and distributed automatically to leadership before the workday began
  • QA staff relieved from early-morning manual checks, allowing them to focus on higher-value activities
